How to Incorporate Live Illustration into Your Event

Thinking about adding a live illustrator to your next event? Here are some of my tips on how to add live illustration in your event.

Find the Right Artist

Look for artists who have experience with live illustration and whose style matches your event’s theme. I can draw in a variety of styles, but generally I try to be colourful and fun. Other artists are more serious in tone and some more geared towards children’s illustration. Browse portfolios and compare them to your companies or clients existing branding material to ensure you’re choosing someone who can deliver the vibe you’re looking for.

Plan the Setup

If you are planning a traditional big paper live illustration, make sure the artist has a comfortable and visible workspace. A well-lit area where attendees can easily see the work in progress is ideal. If it’s a digital illustration you will want either a projector or a big screen and access to plug sockets . Having an AV person on hand to make transitions smooth is handy too!

Promote the Activity

Let your guests know in advance that there will be a live illustrator at your event. This can build anticipation and excitement. Use your event’s marketing channels to spread the word.

Encourage Interaction

Encourage attendees to interact with the artist. I personally love chatting to attendees and talking about any of the inspiring talks and my process illustrating them. I like to think these interactions can enhance the overall human in person experience and make the event more memorable and fun.

In Summary

Live illustration is a great was to capture the spirit of any event, with a bit of planning it’s easy to implement too. By bringing an artist into the mix, you add an element of surprise, engagement, and creativity that’s hard to beat. Whether you’re planning a conference, corporate event, or roundtable, live illustration can help break up the monotony of long intense days and make them accessible and fun!
